CalculatedIs this a new iPhone mini when closed?
The body is approximately 31% wider than a 13 mini: 84.1 versus 64.2 mm. A diagonal is a poor proxy for thumb reach. Duo dimensions ↗, 13 mini dimensions ↗
CalculatedHow much of the inner screen actually shows a movie?
Landscape aspect-fit uses approximately 80.0% of the rectangular panel for 16:9 footage, or 59.5% for 2.39:1 footage. Rounded corners, controls and camera regions are excluded. Cropping fills more area by discarding picture content. Use the comparison above to explore fit versus crop. The method is in Sources, calculations and research limits.
CalculatedIs its shape exactly the same as A-series paper?
Inner and outer long/short ratios are approximately 1.4217 and 1.4549, respectively; neither is exactly √2. The paper analogy in the HN discussion is useful intuition, not a runtime layout contract. Calculation: long edge divided by short edge; see the methods section.
Unresolved distinctionWhy don't App Store screenshots match the physical panel?
Apple lists 1878×2670 panel pixels but 2007×2853 inner-display submission screenshots. The latter contains 14.19% more pixels. These are differently labeled quantities, not proof of an error. A runtime measurement is needed to establish the relationship to display scale and app points. Panel ↗, submission requirements ↗
Calculated exampleHow much memory does one full-screen image need?
An ideal tightly packed inner-panel RGBA8 buffer takes 19.13 MiB. Real render targets can include alignment, depth, multisampling and multiple buffers. This is not an app memory limit. Calculation: width × height × 4 ÷ 1,048,576; see the methods section.
Documented API behaviorDoes requesting a high frame rate guarantee it?
No. Display-link preferences are hints; system policy, power and thermal conditions can change pacing. Record actual callback timing and rendered-frame performance separately. CADisplayLink ↗
First-hand observations disagreeIs the crease gone?
MacRumors saw it under some lighting; TechRadar's writer could feel it but reported not seeing it during a brief session. Those observations support lighting-dependent visibility, not a universal invisible-crease claim or a quantified comparison. MacRumors hands-on ↗, TechRadar hands-on ↗
Observation versus layoutDoes the camera really disappear?
MacRumors noticed the inner camera area on darker content. Separately, the HIG says its reserved UI region becomes active with the camera. Optical visibility and a software exclusion region are different things. Hands-on ↗, HIG ↗
Documented, with timing caveatDoes Pencil support mean a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet?
Apple's Duo FAQ says USB-C Pencil support comes later this year. The current USB-C Pencil lacks pressure sensitivity, wireless charging, squeeze and barrel roll; tilt is supported. Pencil Pro compatibility and Duo hover behavior are not established by this evidence. Duo FAQ ↗, Pencil comparison ↗
Scope-limited answerAre privacy protectors available for the folding screen?
DocumentedWhy could a camera app lose features when it uses automatic camera switching?
The virtual front camera exposes common capabilities: up to 1080p/60, without the individual cameras' depth support. Convenience and maximum capability are different choices. Camera developer talk ↗
DocumentedCan “front camera” point away from the app's user?
Yes: front/back hardware identity is insufficient across displays. Apple's direction coordinator relates cameras to a view. Recheck mirroring and selection on transitions. Camera developer talk ↗
DocumentedIs the camera-switch callback the place to reconfigure capture directly?
The coordinator is main-actor isolated; it provides sendable descriptors for passing work to a camera actor. Keep capture work on the appropriate actor rather than blocking the main UI. Camera developer talk ↗
DocumentedIs the preview crop fixed across the two displays?
Dynamic aspect-ratio selection and rotation coordination are exposed. Test recorded framing against the displayed preview; don't equate filling a view with preserving the full sensor image. Camera developer talk ↗
Device evidence requiredCan an app use every camera simultaneously?
A list of cameras is not a concurrency matrix. Query supported multi-camera device sets, then validate formats and resource pressure for each intended combination. AVFoundation supported sets ↗
Answered by original hands-on reportingDoes 2x mean a separate telephoto lens?
MacRumors identifies a main-camera crop, not a dedicated telephoto. Optical-quality terminology should not be converted into an extra physical camera. Hands-on ↗
Documented distinctionCan it play AV1 and also record AV1?
AV1 playback is listed; recording lists HEVC/H.264. Technical specifications ↗
Documented, conditionalCan the outer display become a teleprompter?
CameraCaptureAccessory supports accompanying outer-screen UI while the app is fullscreen inside with an active camera session. Handle availability changes. This is not unrestricted permission to put arbitrary apps on both displays. Scenes developer talk ↗
Early observation; measurements pendingIs there an audio sweet spot for each pose?
MacRumors reports pose-dependent audio tuning. Establish channel mapping, frequency response, loudness and microphone obstruction with the device open, closed and standing. No acoustic measurements were found. Hands-on ↗
Reported, not verified hereIs 12 GB RAM actually confirmed?
The iFixit device overview lists 12 GB LPDDR5X but the reviewed page does not supply a teardown or identification method establishing it. That makes this a reported specification rather than a verified measurement. iFixit overview ↗
Documented: noWould physical RAM tell a developer the safe memory budget?
App memory limits can change and differ from physical capacity. Use available-memory information as a current advisory signal; avoid caching or treating it as a target to exhaust. Memory API ↗
Manufacturer-describedWhat does the cooling system actually connect to?
Apple describes the chip package connecting directly to a custom vapor chamber. That is useful architecture information, but it does not establish case temperature or a sustained benchmark for a particular app. Engineering announcement ↗
No absolute value establishedDoes “50% more memory bandwidth” reveal GB/s?
Apple's relative bandwidth claim does not supply enough information to compute an absolute rate without a verified baseline and matching conditions. Engineering announcement ↗
NoDoes the charging recommendation mean 60 W enters the phone?
The 60 W figure describes the recommended adapter capability. Charging specification ↗
Documented interface ceilingDoes USB-C mean Thunderbolt?
USB 3 up to 10 Gb/s and DisplayPort are listed. Technical specifications ↗
Manufacturer-described: noIs the battery just one cell folded in half?
Apple describes a battery on each side. Pack wiring, individual capacities and service pairing are separate unresolved questions. Engineering announcement ↗
DocumentedCan it take a physical SIM when traveling?
Apple's FAQ says eSIM-only worldwide. Check carrier provisioning rather than assume a regional SIM tray. Product FAQ ↗
Not by itselfDoes Bluetooth 6 establish precise ranging or lossless headphone audio?
The Bluetooth standard introduces Channel Sounding; a particular device's API access, implementation and supported audio profiles still need confirmation. Bluetooth SIG ↗
DocumentedHow many light sensors are there?
Four ambient-light sensors are listed. Their placement, fusion and app access are not established. Technical specifications ↗
General material backgroundWhat does Grade 5 tell us—and what doesn't it?
It denotes the Ti-6Al-4V family, nominally about 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. It does not establish scratch resistance, component heat treatment or Apple-specific chemistry. TIMET alloy data ↗
No such conclusion is supportedIs every supporting part titanium?
Apple's environmental report also identifies an aluminum internal frame and steel-containing components. More specifically, it mentions a steel display support plate, while the announcement describes a titanium bottom plate. These may be different parts; their exact relationship remains unresolved. Environmental report, p. 2 ↗, announcement ↗
Manufacturer-described assemblyIs the foldable surface simply glass or simply plastic?
Apple describes a polymer cover plus glass above and below the panel, with adhesives permitting relative movement. Surface hardness, structural stiffness and bend endurance need separate evidence. Engineering announcement ↗
Documented nuanceDoes right-to-left language move the side controls?
Hardware-aligned controls retain their side in RTL. In Split View, each app uses its outer edge. Test localization and left-handed reach separately; language direction is not a handedness setting. HIG ↗
Documented exceptionDo apps always get vertical navigation?
The inner portrait layout retains horizontal bars. A “move everything to the right” migration would be wrong. HIG ↗
Documented capability, performance unmeasuredCan a hinge become a musical or game controller?
Apple exposes continuous angle updates and high-level states. Its example uses pitch bend. For layout, use arrangement/region APIs. Sensor precision, update rate and noise still need measurement. Scenes developer talk ↗
Documented restrictionCan an app open a second window while the phone is closed?
New windows are inner-display only; handle failed activation and preserve scene state. Scenes developer talk ↗
Documented distinctionDo old apps stop working?
Apple says existing apps run without recompiling; SDK versions change presentation and screen use. Compatibility, adaptive presentation and adoption of optional features need separate labels. Preparation talk ↗
Availability checked September 10Can developers reproduce all of this today?
The HIG is live. Apple's readiness page still labels Xcode 27.1 beta and preparation documentation as coming later this month. A demonstration is not evidence of a downloadable runtime or supported unattended controls. Readiness page ↗, HIG ↗
Still to measure 22
Flicker, heat, latency and other details that need reproducible evidence.
Unverified measurementWhat is the flicker waveform, not just a PWM frequency?
No reproducible Duo waveform was established in this search. Publish brightness-dependent frequency, modulation depth and waveform shape for each display, with photodiode setup and sampling rate. A panel-family rumor or a video of rolling bands is insufficient. Avoid medical comfort guarantees.
Unverified measurementHow much detail does nano-texture scatter around tiny text?
Photograph identical fine text and one-pixel patterns under controlled illumination and magnification. Separate camera artifacts, optical haze and subpixel structure. This matters more to code readers than a generic “matte” label.
Unverified measurementWhat is the actual subpixel layout near the hidden camera?
Seek microscopy of uniform colors and the camera region. Record any local density or layout difference rather than naming a supplier or assuming the same panel as a Samsung phone.
Unverified measurementHow bright is a mostly white page after ten minutes?
Use sustained luminance versus time, with ambient light, temperature, white-window area and power state recorded. A peak-brightness label cannot answer outdoor document-reading performance.
Unverified measurementIs the panel native 10-bit, or does it use temporal dithering?
Separate panel bit depth, rendering format and HDR decoding. Obtain panel documentation or suitable temporal measurements; a supported HDR format does not settle this.
Unverified measurementDoes touch feel different across the fold?
Record stroke continuity, coordinate error, palm rejection and touch-to-photon delay across the crease, at edges and near the camera. Test finger and supported stylus separately after support ships.
Unverified measurementDoes the screen darken through polarized sunglasses?
Rotate each display behind a known polarizer, testing brightness and color at several angles. This is a useful outdoor-use question that peak nits cannot answer.
Unverified measurementDo fingerprints or repeated cleaning change the matte effect?
Wait for Duo-specific care guidance, then document haze and reflection before/after ordinary use and approved cleaning. Do not borrow cleaning instructions for a nano-texture Mac display or recommend solvents from analogy.
Unverified measurementHow much do camera switching and exposure changes interrupt a call?
Measure blank/frozen frames, audio continuity, exposure settling and timestamp gaps during opening, closing and rotation. Include poor light and interrupted permissions.
Unverified measurementHow much detail is lost through the under-display camera?
Compare controlled resolution, flare and noise targets under identical illumination. Aperture alone cannot answer this; publish sample crops with camera/processing settings.
Unverified workflowCan it be a dependable portable recording workstation?
Test an external audio interface, simultaneous monitoring/capture, USB power, screen transitions and long recordings. Publish round-trip latency and interruption behavior for the exact accessory and app, not a universal audio-latency number.
Unverified measurementHow fast are AI models after fifteen minutes, with another app open?
Record model, quantization, context length, tokens/second, time to first output, memory and thermal state. Separate local execution from remote requests. A chip name cannot answer sustainable model size.
Unverified measurementDoes the larger storage option write faster?
Compare capacities using identical workloads, fill levels, file sizes and thermal conditions. Include sustained recording, not only a short benchmark that may fit in caches.
UnverifiedWhat are the battery capacities in Wh, and can both be replaced independently?
Seek pack labels, service procedures and teardown evidence. Do not add mAh from unknown voltage configurations or derive capacity from advertised runtime.
Unverified measurementDoes opening the phone improve cooling?
Run the same workload, render resolution and brightness in each pose. Otherwise a changing graphics workload confounds any apparent cooling advantage. Include a case as a separately reported configuration.
Unverified measurementHow much power does charging really draw over time?
Capture USB-PD negotiation and voltage/current curves against charge level and temperature, both idle and under load. Distinguish charger output, phone input and energy stored in cells.
Unverified workflowCan one cable drive a monitor, SSD and audio interface reliably?
Test a named powered hub, display mode, storage format and audio interface together. Record disconnects and power interruptions while folding; protocol labels alone don't verify the complete setup.
Unverified measurementDoes holding the hinge change radio performance?
Compare controlled Wi-Fi/cellular throughput, latency and signal measurements by grip and pose. Record bands, access point or carrier, distance and conditions; avoid generalizing from one speed test.
Unverified measurementDoes a magnetic case disturb navigation or hinge sensing?
Compare compass readings, pose transitions and accessory detection with and without a named case. This is an investigation, not an allegation of interference.
Unverified measurementWill it hold the angle I need on a train or tilted desk?
Measure stable angle range, opening torque, angle drift and sliding with/without a case. Keep hinge angle sensing accuracy separate from mechanical holding strength.
Unverified usability resultHow much keyboard leaves room for an actual conversation?
Capture the same chat, code editor and form with keyboard open in each supported arrangement. Report visible lines, covered actions, caret visibility and reach. A launch animation alone does not show the space left for typing.
Unverified service detailsWhat does a screen or hinge repair really involve?
Seek a dated parts catalog, regional price, calibration requirements, disassembly method and post-repair testing. A device page titled “repair help” is not a completed teardown or a repairability score. Never infer years of life from a component count.
Sources, calculations and research limits
How the geometry works
Inner: 2670 × 1878 pixels. Outer: 2034 × 1398. Divide the longer edge by the shorter for the panel ratio. The smaller of panel/video and video/panel gives the area fraction shown above. For fill, the same fraction describes retained source-picture area.
Buffer example: width × height × 4 ÷ 1,048,576 gives ideal RGBA8 MiB. Screenshot comparison: (2007 × 2853 ÷ (1878 × 2670) − 1) × 100. Width comparison: (84.1 ÷ 64.2 − 1) × 100. These are calculations, not measured app bounds or memory limits.

Where the questions came from
We reviewed discussions in iOSProgramming, r/hardware, Hacker News and enthusiast communities, then added engineering investigations of our own. This is qualitative research, not a popularity survey. Forum claims are not treated as confirmed specifications.
First-hand observations describe brief sessions, not endurance tests. Reported RAM, component identities and screenshot-to-panel relationships retain their uncertainty. A missing result means it was not established by the sources reviewed.
